Pixar Animation Studios

Pixar animation studios has been around since 1986 and over the past years, it has developed a famous reputation to its animation films that has gone and won awards such as 27 academy awards, 7 golden globes awards and 11 Grammy awards as well as many other notable awards.

Moreover, Pixar is primarily structured by film, and concentrates on the story and narrative, which is portrayed throughout its work.

History of Pixar
Pixar was first originally founded as “The graphics group” in 1979 which was a Computer Division for Lucasfilms (Who was in charge of developing state of the art computer technology for the film industry at the time).

Later in the years John Lasseter was hired for The Graphics Group whom were still working for Lucasfilm's computer division. During 1984 John Lasseter started to work on a short film which was “The Adventures of AndrĂ© and Wally B.” (1983).

John Lasseter is considered to be one of the key people at Pixar animation studios.

Pixar have also developed it's very own software called 'Renderman' which can date back to the 1970's from the university of Utah. It has been used in a lot of major films that require CGI; such as Finding Nemo, Avengers Age of Ultron, The incredibles, Godzilla etc...

Animated films that they have produced
Pixar has produced 14 featured films which the first being Toy story (1995) to the latest being released which is Monsters Inc. (2001).

Most of Pixar films are notable for their success and rarely disappoint it's target audience.

Toy Story
Toy Story was the first animated full length film that Pixar produced. It has won many awards such as Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Original song. Moreover it also won Special Achievement Academy Award and was considered to be one of or the best animated feature film to have ever been created.

The animated movie was directed by John Lasseter and produced by Bonnie Arnold and Ralph Guggenheim.

Monster Inc.
Monster Inc was released in 2001 and directed Pete Docter and produced by Pixar animation studios. The idea was first introduced in a lunch meeting in 1994 during the production of Toy Story, the people who were attending were John Lasseter, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton and Joe Ranft.

Pete Docter continued to work on the film Monsters Inc in 1996 while other co workers focused on Bugs Life and Toy Story 2. During the pre production, Docter made a rough draft with a few other colleagues which would be a resemblance to the final film. After Pete Docter drafted the idea to Disney and gained some feedback and changes for the film by the famous Disney animator Joe Grant (whose work date back to Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs)

Job Roles within Pixar

Animation Director/Supervisor

The job role of an animation director mainly consist of directing and managing the overall project in general and maintaining the task at hand

The main elements that the director must understand are:

  • Performance
  • Style
  • Quality
  • Scheduling
  • Budgetary requirements
  • Continuity
  • Technical

"Animation Directors are responsible for the quality of the animation, for keeping it on brief and for delivering consistent performances by assigning, or casting, the appropriate Animators. The role of Animation Director may only exist on larger projects and is often combined with the Director role on smaller productions."
 http://creativeskillset.org/creative_industries/animation/job_roles/352_animation_director_or_supervisor

Furthermore, an animation director/supervisor can be implemented in many ways as the term is not specific in the animation industry. Moreover, a Japanese animation studio interpret 'Animation Director' differently to UK and American definition of the term. "The animation director in these sorts of productions is expected to supervise sequences, not characters, and often draws many of the key frame poses that are the basis for the creation of the rest of the scene", this job role is considered to be more of the key poser in which who inputs all of the the golden poses. Also to add to that, the 'Inbetweener' fills in those between frames.

I would also like to mention that the animation Director can just be considered a director of animating a single character or a sequence and not any other sequences or characters. Overall, the animation director is notable for the creative leader within the studio and maintains the creative project's.

The main film director for Pixar studios is John Lasseter (Born January 12, 1957) who is also a screenwriter, producer, animator and the chief creative officer at DisneyToon studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Concept artist
The concept artist undertakes the role of producing the concept of the characters, environments or just objects.

A concept artist is an individual artist who creates a visual design for an item, character, or an area that does not yet exist. Also to expand on this, there are different kind of artist that only focuses on backgrounds and characters etc...

A concept artist includes, but is not limited to, film, animation, and more recently video game production. A concept artist may be required for nothing more than preliminary artwork, or may be part of a creative team until a project reaches an end. While it is necessary to have the skills of a fine artist, a concept artist must also be able to work to strict deadlines in the capacity of a graphic designer

Some concept artists may start as fine artists, industrial designers, animators, or even special effects artists. Interpretation of ideas and how they are realized is where the concept artist's individual creativity is most evident, as subject matter is often beyond their control, to a degree of skill, concept artist usually taught through a fine art course or something that is some what similar. Furthermore the job role itself is a very competitive field to comprehend, since it can be popular within the creative industry.

Concept art is a form of illustration that is use to portray/convey an idea (before it is put into its final product) which is used through a variety of industries, but mainly the creative industry. To name a few of the industries that a concept artist is used in are:

  • Films
  • Video games
  • Animation
  • Comic books

Also the skills that usually summarize a concept artist is usually a solid knowledge in color, anatomy and know how to draw in perspective.

A famous concept artist from Pixar that worked on the animation 'Brave' was an artist named Steve Pilcher.

3D Animator
Pixar animators are usually looked upon as only the best or at least extremely skillful. One of the animators who helped animate the notorious Monsters Inc. film was James Fords Murphy. He has also been noticed through his works on 'Toy Story 2' (1999) and 'A Bugs Life' (1998).

The process of 3D animation usually consist of using a 3D software in which the animator sets it into motion. They use real life references as examples to create the animation more life like.

Skills that are required for a 3D animator:

  • Good art and design skills
  • Communication
  • IT skills
Conclusion
Overall, I find that Pixar Animation Studios does create an impact to the animation industry by inspiring the way we strive towards our goals and learning new methods to animate. The concept of the animation industry is extremely big and intimidating for beginners or young animators who are trying to get a foot in the door.

I like how Pixar share it's stories with the rest of the world and I believe that Pixar will go further within the animation industry... and leave it mark on the world.
